Meeting Minutes – November 1, 2023 (Meeting held on Zoom)
Opening
• Andrew Robinson (President) welcomed everyone and outlined guidelines
Review of past minutes
• No past minutes for October not currently posted
Environmental Committee Update / Discussion – Jon (Chair) • No new update regrading environmental programs • Jon scheduling to meet with Cameron regarding concerns with CN • Meeting could be with CN or for a walk along the tracks • Is there an option to have tracks electrified over gas / diesel
Planning & Traffic Committee Update / Discussion – Herman (Chair) • At there last meeting the Committee discussed Burlington Street reconstruction, the Waterfront Trust, advanced development warning from the City and the Sunset Garden – these items were brought forward for review (see committed notes attached) • The Committee brought forward motions for each item which the Association discussed, voted on and approved o Burlington Street – Motion (Herman), seconded (Robert) – pass o Waterfront Trust – Motion (Herman), seconded (Andrew) - pass o Development notice – Motion (Herman), seconded (Curtis) – pass
- Passed with the understanding that the intent of the advanced notice is not to / for appeal of all developments only to be informed of them, similar to Hydro or Forestry
o Sunset Garden – Motion (Sandra), seconded (Herman) - pass
Financial Update – Curtis (Chair)
• No current income only bank fees out going
• Receipts being prepared for City to have approved grant released
Community Engagement Update / Discussion
• No new update regarding community engagement
• Always looking for input / help posting community information
Other Business / Updates
• The recent North End food drive collected 1800lbs of food and $700.00
• Sonic Walk at Pier 8 a sound and light show (November 1 to November 26 from 5:00pm to 10:00pm)
• North End Town Hall hosted by Cameron at Central Library (November 13 from 6:30pm to 9:00pm)
• Northender of the Year nominations sponsored by The Breeze’s
• (Deadline is November 13 with awards presentation December 2)
• City Planning Committee discussing the Tower at City Hall (November 14 starting at 9:30am)
Guest Presentation – Hamilton Police (Sergeant - Alex Buck)
• For accurate numbers all crimes / concerns need to be reported
• Property & violent crimes are currently higher than the 5-year average
• Traffic collisions in the neighbourhood are decreasing
• The top three reason for calls to Police from the Northend are trespassing, suspicious person and need of assistance.
• Hamilton Police do have plain clothes and cars teams on the street
• The force is currently experiencing staffing issues with recruitment and retention leading to few officers
• Typically there are 16 officers that patrol the downtown daily
• For charges to be laid there needs to be evidence and statements
• Responses to incidents can be done in person, online or by phone
